Expert Video — What is HLA testing, and why is it done for metastatic uveal melanoma?

Medical oncologist Dr. Shaheer Khan of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute in New York City explains what HLA testing is and why it matters for people with metastatic uveal melanoma. HLA testing looks at specific markers in the immune system that help the body recognize what belongs in your body versus what doesn't. This test is important because a treatment called tebentafusp only works in patients with a specific HLA type, called HLA-A*02:01. A simple blood test can determine whether a patient has this marker, helping doctors decide if tebentafusp or other treatment options may be appropriate.
