Expert Video — What risk factors influence whether uveal melanoma will spread (metastasize)?

Dr. Marlana Orloff, a medical oncologist at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, discusses the factors that can influence whether uveal melanoma may spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body, even after the primary eye tumor has been treated. She explains that risk depends on features of the original tumor, including its size, stage, location in the eye (such as involvement of the ciliary body), whether it has grown outside the eye, and genetic risk. Genetic testing of the tumor also plays an important role, helping doctors identify lower- or higher-risk tumors. Dr. Orloff emphasizes that these factors guide how closely patients are monitored over time.
